A recent report by care reviews website carehome.co.uk highlights continuing uncertainty for care seekers over who will pay for care. One in five respondents were unsure who would fund their care (out of over 38,441 care seekers who made care enquiries between 1 November 2023 and 31 October 2024).
In addition, only 5% of care seekers thought they would be entitled to NHS continuing healthcare funding, a package of care provided by the NHS to individuals with significant and ongoing health needs.
Tim Davies, CEO comments: “Many people are unaware of NHS continuing healthcare and do not know they could be eligible for funding. We’re passionate about supporting families to ensure that those eligible for funding receive it.”
With care costs rising, and average nursing care costs reaching £1,410 per week, it’s even more important for families supporting loved ones with significant health needs that they get the best advice.
“On top of the lack of signposting to continuing healthcare funding, we’re also seeing wide variations in success rates depending on where you live in England and Wales. We know how challenging it can be for families to get through the assessment process. The geographic variations suggest there are inconsistencies in how the national guidelines are applied at a local ICB level, which creates further uncertainty for families.”
